Dissertation Fellowship Application Information
The Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity is pleased to announce that the application for the CCSRE Graduate Dissertation Fellowship is now open for AY 2024-25. Dissertation Fellows are outstanding advanced doctoral students whose writing and research apply a comparative and interdisciplinary lens to the study of race and ethnicity.
Fellows will benefit from the support of a multidisciplinary cohort of graduate students, gain exposure to studies of race and ethnicity across the disciplines, and prepare for careers advancing racial equity in and beyond the university. They will also gain experience with mentorship and race-centered pedagogy.

Benefits:
- A stipend of at least $36,000 covering Autumn quarter 2024, Winter quarter 2025, and Spring quarter 2025 (note that funding cannot be banked)
- TGR fees and 50% of health coverage for the academic year (Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters)
- Shared office space
Eligibility:
All currently enrolled Stanford Ph.D. candidates at TGR status, in any discipline, are invited to apply. Students can apply to both the Dissertation Fellowship and Graduate Teaching Fellowship, but will receive an offer for no more than one fellowship.
Submissions from students of all backgrounds are welcome. The criteria for selection for the CCSRE Graduate Dissertation Fellowship are race-nautral, and all evaluations will be undertaken in conformance with the Supreme Court's June 2023 decision in SFFA v. Harvard / UNC.
APPLICANTS MUST
- Reach TGR status by the start of the Autumn quarter 2024
- Be continuously enrolled for the duration of their fellowship
- Be on campus during fall, winter, and spring quarters of the fellowship year
- Have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. other than the dissertation
- Have departmental approval for their dissertation proposal
- Conduct dissertation research that engages with race and ethnicity
- Have a strong likelihood of completing the degree by the end of the fellowship
Responsibilities over the course of the fellowship year:
- No other employment, assistantship, or fellowship (unless specifically intended for travel or research expense) may be held concurrently. Exceptions to this restriction must be approved by CCSRE.
- Fellows must enroll in the CCSRE Graduate Fellows' Research Seminar.
- Fellows must attend the Center's Faculty Seminar Series and quarterly Faculty Fellows Chautauquas.
- Fellows must be in residence at CCSRE during the fellowship year; they are expected to attend events and the biweekly seminar in person.
- Fellows must mentor 2-4 undergraduate majors and meet with them at least once per quarter.
- Fellows will submit a report detailing the year's work at the end of their fellowship year.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS
- 2-page curriculum vitae
- A 2- to 3-page cover letter. The letter should include:
- A summary of your dissertation research and its contribution to your field
- A discussion of how your research contributes to the comparative study of race and ethnicity
- Current transcript from Axess (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)
- A projected 1-page timetable of the fellowship year
- A representative 10-page writing sample taken from your dissertation in progress
- One letter of recommendation from a Stanford faculty member (preferably affiliated with CCSRE) emailed directly by the recommender to Raquel Navarro Calara at raquelnc [at] stanford.edu (raquelnc[at]stanford[dot]edu). Please include the name of the applicant in the subject line. Recommenders do not need to write more than one letter for candidates applying to both the Dissertation and Teaching Fellowships, but in that case the letter should address both teaching and research. Letters must be submitted by the application deadline.
