Project Description:

The Changing Cities Research Lab and the City of Oakland’s Department of Housing and Community Development are partnering to tackle racial disparities in residential instability for low-income residents in the City of Oakland. While numerous efforts target formal forms of displacement like eviction, this research will identify and measure other forms of residential instability that come with gentrification—including informal forms of displacement, crowded and substandard living conditions, and constrained options when moving—and examine differences across neighborhoods and racial and ethnic groups. The project will utilize a unique, large-scale, longitudinal dataset of over 12,000 Oakland residents, surveys, and interviews to understand the drivers of racial disparities in achieving residential stability and develop timely data-driven policies.
