Please join us for a film screening of SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM on October 11 and post-screening Q&A with Producer and Director Paul Espinosa, who earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology at Stanford University. Espinosa's Galarza/Camarillo lecture, "Reflections of a Chicano Filmmaker: Looking Back at Stories Told," will be held the day following on October 12. Both the Galarza/Camarillo film screening and lecture will take place at Oshman Hall at 6:30pm.
SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM is the story of musician and activist "Chunky" Sanchez and his role in the Chicano Movement in San Diego, California.
ABOUT PAUL ESPINOSA
Paul Espinosa is an award-winning filmmaker and anthropologist who has worked at the intersection of social justice, media culture and Latino history over the last 40 years. He is the President/CEO of Espinosa Productions, a film and video company specializing in both documentary and narrative films focused on Latino issues and the U.S.-Mexico border region. Espinosa received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Anthropology where he specialized in the cultural analysis of television communication and his B.A. degree from Brown University, also in Anthropology. He worked with the public television stations in San Diego and Dallas as a Senior Producer and Executive Producer. He is Professor Emeritus and a founding faculty member in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University and is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities around the country.
Espinosa’s films capture the transformative energy of the men and women of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, both past and present. Among his many films for PBS are: The Lemon Grove Incident, …and the earth did not swallow him, The Hunt for Pancho Villa, The U.S.-Mexican War: 1846-1848, Los Mineros, California and the American Dream, The Price of Renewal, In the Shadow of the Law, Singing Our Way to Freedom, 1492 Revisited and Ballad of an Unsung Hero. His films have been screened at festivals around the world and have won many awards including eight Emmys and top documentary awards from many festivals.

ABOUT THE GALARZA/CAMARILLO LECTURE
CCSRE and the Program in Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies, in collaboration with El Centro Chicano/Latino, sponsored the annual Ernesto Galarza Lecture for many years. Beginning in 2022, CCSRE and Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies will partner with the Stanford Latino Alumni Association to co-sponsor the event. Also beginning this year, the annual event will be renamed the Galarza/Camarillo Lecture to reflect the financial commitment made by Al Camarillo (Leon Sloss Jr. Memorial Professor, Emeritus, and founding director of CCSRE) to support the event that recognizes the pioneering work of one of his heroes - scholar, writer, and activist Ernesto Galarza.
