Undergraduate Fellowships

Since 2007, the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity has scaffolded summer fellowships that pair undergraduate students completing their frosh, sophomore, and junior years with 1) CCSRE faculty affiliates working on community-engaged research and 2) community partners committed to advancing racial justice. These Cardinal Quarter Fellowships fall into two categories:

The CCSRE Community-Based Research (CBR) Fellowship pairs students with projects spearheaded by CCSRE faculty affiliates. CBR provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to develop a structured research project in collaboration with a faculty mentor and an organization committed to public service and/or community development. This program facilitates the integration of undergraduate students into original and innovative research that focuses on community impact and reinvestment. It simultaneously supports faculty-led projects that engage with issues of race, justice, and power.

The CCSRE Praxis fellowship supports students interested in social change, activism, and community organizing by matching students with fellowship positions at grassroots organizations with commitments to racial justice. The fellows undertake a summer project that is co-designed with their respective organizations during the spring quarter. Students learn from experienced organizers and community leaders, participate in skill-building workshops, study movement histories, and engage directly in movement-building work.

CBR and Praxis fellows prepare for their summer work by enrolling in CSRE 199 in the Spring quarter. The course centers ethical frameworks for community advocacy and engaged research. Fellows gain access to professional and technical training, faculty mentors, a vibrant cohort of peers, and a dedicated team of fellowship coordinators. The CCSRE fellowship structure engages, challenges, and empowers students as they delve into meaningful and transformative work with community partners.

Fellows are paid $7,500 for the summer for 35+ hours of work per week for ten weeks. Fellows may be eligible for up to $1,500 supplementary pay in accordance with financial need.

The CCSRE Undergraduate Summer Fellowships applications for AY 2024-2025 are now closed. Please check back again next year for the AY 2025-2026 application cycle.
