Project title: Legal Subjecthood and the Colonial Property Relation in Palestine

Project description: My project examines the relationship between the legal status of Palestinian permanent residents of Israel in East Jerusalem and their rights to property. In doing so, I seek to answer how the idea of the juridical subject expresses itself in Israeli law alongside and through the mass dispossession of Palestinian land. My work is in conversation with Marxist and critical race theorists of property that explore the connection between capitalist economy, racial taxonomization, colonial dispossession of land, and juridical concepts of the law. Using East Jerusalem as a case study, I will look at how “Arab” / “absentee” legal status both grants legibility to and facilitates the dispossession of East Jerusalemites.
