Dissertation Title
Ethnic Identity and Homeland Politics in the Oromo Diaspora

Beka Guluma is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology. His dissertation research examines identity, immigrant incorporation, and engagement in homeland politics among the Oromo—the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. Specifically, he is interested in how ethnic conflict in the homeland shapes ethnic and racial self-identification and immigrant incorporation in the receiving society. His research is based on interviews with first- and second-generation Oromo immigrants in the Washington D.C. and Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan areas. Outside of Stanford, Beka has served as a co-facilitator for the Stanford Prison Education Project (SPEP), which provides educational programs in partnership with the San Francisco County jails.
