Joseph Cloward is a Ph.D. candidate in political science. Joseph’s research centers on the political rights of non-citizen immigrants. His dissertation explores how a thoroughgoing commitment to democratic values might justify expanding non-citizen immigrants’ political rights, including both voting and other forms of participation. He has additionally written on the political representation of unenfranchised groups through 19th century petitioning and on the permissibility of public-school teachers making politically-motivated decisions in their classrooms.
Before coming to Stanford, Joseph earned a BA in International Relations and German Studies at Penn. He also worked as a high school history teacher in a border town in South Texas, an experience that continues to inform his work. You can find his website here.
