Kimya Loder is a PhD candidate in Sociology at Stanford University. She currently uses ethnographic and fieldwork methods to explore community-based political participation and grassroots organizing in urban Black communities. She is also interested in conceptions of the nation-state and national identities across the African Diaspora. At Stanford, Kimya has received fellowships through the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, McCoy Center for Ethics in Society, and Haas Center for Public Service. She holds an M. A. in Sociology from Stanford University and B.A. in Sociology and International Studies from Spelman College, with honors. Kimya is motivated by the legacy of deeply rooted activism her hometown of Birmingham, AL. She has also found joy in building community among students on campus through her work with the Black Studies Collective Research Group, Black Community Services Center, and the Black Graduate Student Association.
