Racial health disparities, many of which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, demand immediate and sustained intervention to address structural racism and promote health equity. Incorporating anti-racism communication strategies into clinical care, research recruitment and study protocols, and the general healthcare environment is critical to the delivery of equitable health care and the advancement of inclusive science. The CCSRE-supported Presence for Racial Justice Action Lab aims to develop and disseminate evidence-based communication practices for clinicians to address structural, institutional, and personally mediated forms of racism faced by Black patients. The proposed project will draw on the established Stanford Presence 5 framework for humanism in medicine, and ongoing Presence for Racial Justice qualitative research and community-based participatory research with clinics in Oakland, CA, Leeds, AL, Rochester, NY, and Memphis, TN. The Presence for Racial Justice Action Lab will serve to translate this research into action by synthesizing research findings and disseminating recommendations for communication strategies that promote racial justice, build trust, and engage Black patients in clinical care.
