Abstract

The Salinas Valley in California, widely referred to as “the Salad Bowl of the World” plays a central role in the nation’s agricultural economy. Yet the labor that sustains this productivity remains largely invisible, and the individuals who harvest and steward these crops are too often reduced to anonymous units of production rather than recognized as workers with histories, skills, and complex lived experiences. While the region’s fields produce a substantial share of the United States’ lettuce, strawberries, and other vegetables, the farmworkers who make this abundance possible frequently face long hours, low wages, and unstable living conditions with limited public acknowledgment or institutional support. Having grown up in Salinas, I have observed firsthand the essential contributions of farmworkers to both local and global food systems, as well as the persistent lack of nuanced representation of their lives in public discourse. This project addresses that gap by using photographic journalism to document and analyze the everyday labor, social realities, and human experiences of farmworkers in the Salinas Valley.
