Beyond the Stadium: Educational Justice & Gentrification in Inglewood, CA
Abstract
This project examines the intersection of declining enrollment in Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) and neighborhood gentrification, asking: How do IUSD's declining enrollment and neighborhood gentrification shape students' college access? Drawing on scholarship about predatory rhetorics of urban development, racialized exclusion, and district finance, the research traces Inglewood's transformation from a thriving Black enclave to a site of extractive development centered around urban developments. The project examines the interconnected manifestations of displacement that disproportionately impact Black and Latinx communities. The project takes the form of a community pamphlet, a genre with deep roots in grassroots organizing and designed to make policy research accessible and actionable for Inglewood residents. It aims to empower community members, demanding the reallocation of funding from developers back into classrooms.
