Gentrification: MacArthur Park and Echo Park

Abstract

This project focuses on two communities in Los Angeles: Echo Park and MacArthur Park. It is a collection of memories, experiences, and history in connection to gentrification for myself, my family, and my Latine community of Los Angeles, California. As gentrification begins to center in communities like mine, I wonder what will happen to our people; where will we be pushed to now? My research project works to analyze how spatial changes brought about by gentrification onto Latine marginalized communities adversely affects Latine individuals of low-income and immigrant backgrounds in Los Angeles in various ways. My research will identify how the racialized tool of gentrification disproportionately and purposely impacts certain marginalized groups over others, which displaces these communities and heavily limits their opportunities for upward mobility.
