Introduction to African American English for Elementary

Abstract

This project is a lesson plan focused on teaching the basics of African American English to young African American English speakers. Utilizing theories of funds of knowledge, backwards design, and scholarship on African American language, this lesson serves as a basis for integrating and uplifting AAE in academic contexts, by giving young scholars (ages 8-11) the tools to discuss language bias and explain to others the value of their language.
